<p>I've been asked that before, and the only thing I can come up
with (beyond luck of the genetic dice) is I've always pointed my
finger at the text as I read to my kids. My theory is even
before we're thinking animals (letters make these sounds, this
rule and that, etc), we're amazing pattern recognition
machines. Kids don't need to know <em>how</em> symbols equal
words in order to <em>read</em> them. It's like learning a
foreign language by immersion verses study, and the moving
finger immerses kids in the written word.</p>
